-
- AmiWin is an implementation of X11R6 (the X-Windows server) for AmigaDOS
- 2.04 or higher. It comes with screen drivers for OCS/ECS/AGA, plus the
- most popular 24-bit boards (Picasso, HRG, CyberGraphX, Retina, Graffity).
- 4MB is recommended (minimum), as is a 68030 or better. It works with
- AmiTCP v2+ and AS225R2. A 3-button mouse is recommended (X applications
- want to use the middle button) but not required.
-
- Chimera is a Web browser that opens a window on the AmiWin screen, just
- like Xmosaic does on my OSF/1 (UNIX) workstation. (I've also used AmiWin
- to display windows for Xmosaic, but the X handshaking is pretty fierce --
- even at 28.8Kb.) The Web is VERY data-intensive, so performance of ANY
- browser is limited more by the speed of your network link than it is by
- anything else. Chimera displays inline graphics like a champ, but only
- after downloading them. Since .gif files run into the tens of KB (and
- download speeds peaking at 2KB/sec), expect LOTS of delays, regardless of
- the browser you use.
-
- If you NEED X support, get the registered version of AmiWin. It's a very
- good implementation. Chimera is a bit dated (Web standards are advancing
- very rapidly these days), but is also a good port.
